Japanese name: サクラタデ (桜蓼)
Scientific name: Persicaria odorata subsp. conspicua

Persicaria odorata subsp. conspicua

[Overview]
A perennial 30–100 cm tall, growing in sunny wetlands.
It has slender underground stems.
The stem branches in the lower part, and the upper part rises upright.
The leaves are simple and alternate, lanceolate, 6–18 cm long and 1–3 cm wide.
Both surfaces of the leaves have short hairs and yellow glandular dots.
Pseudoracemes emerge from the stem tips, bearing somewhat sparse flowers.
The upper part of the inflorescence often droops.
The flowers have no corolla; the conspicuous calyx is pale red.
The fruit is an achene, black with a dull gloss.

[Cultivation]
Propagate by division.
It prefers sunny soil that retains water well.
If strong midsummer sunlight scorches the leaves, provide 50–60% shading.
Keep it on the moist side when watering; for potted plants, a saucer may be placed under the pot to water from below.
Fertilizer applied at planting is sufficient.
There are no particular pests or diseases.
