Euphorbia jolkinii ("Iwataigeki")

Japanese name: イワタイゲキ (岩大戟)
Scientific name: Euphorbia jolkinii

Euphorbia jolkinii

[Overview]
A perennial found on rocky seashores.
In summer the aboveground parts die back and the plant becomes dormant.
The roots and rhizomes develop and form a large clump.
White milky sap comes out when the stems or leaves are damaged.
The stems are 20–95 cm long and are produced in large numbers.
The leaves are simple and alternate, oblong to narrowly lanceolate, 3.5–8 cm long and 0.7–1.5 cm wide.
At the branch tips the leaves are whorl-like, and from their center emerges a cyathium enclosed in yellow bracts.
During the flowering season, the leaves on the upper part of the stem turn yellow, like the bracts.
The flowers have no petals.
The fruit is a spherical capsule with wart-like projections on the surface.

[Notes]
Contact with the sap causes a rash.
