Euonymus oxyphyllus var. oxyphyllus ("Tsuribana")
Japanese name: ツリバナ (吊花)
Scientific name: Euonymus oxyphyllus var. oxyphyllus
[Overview]
A deciduous small tree about 3–6 m tall, growing in forests and at forest edges from lowlands to mountains.
The current-year twigs are green, and old branches become purplish brown.
The leaves are opposite, ovate to oblong, 3.5–10 cm long and 2–5 cm wide, papery, with fine serrations.
The petiole is 0.3–1 cm long.
The flowers are borne, 10–25 per cyme, in cymes that arise from the leaf axils at the base of new branches or beside the bud scale scars.
The inflorescence has a long stalk 3–6 cm long, branches freely, and hangs down.
The flowers are about 8 mm across, with 5 petals, and are yellowish green, sometimes with purple spots.
The fruit is a globose capsule about 1 cm across, without wings.
The fruit ripens bright purplish red, splits into 5, and hangs out vermilion-red seeds.
[Cultivation]
Propagate from seed, cuttings, or layering.
It prefers a position in partial shade with good moisture retention.
[Notes]
The Japanese name derives from the long, drooping inflorescences.
