Euonymus chibae ("Hizenmayumi")
Japanese name: ヒゼンマユミ (肥前真弓、肥前檀、肥前檀弓)
Scientific name: Euonymus chibae
[Overview]
An evergreen tree growing up to 12 m tall, found in forests near the coast.
The current year's branches are yellow-green, four-ridged, and smooth.
Leaves are simple and opposite, elliptical to broadly elliptical, 5–12 cm long and 2.5–6 cm wide, glossy and hairless, with low serrations on the margin of the upper half.
The petiole is 0.5–1.5 cm long.
It is dioecious, and the inflorescences and flowers are the same in form on male and female plants.
Cymes 2–5 cm long emerge from the lower leaf axils of the current year's branches, bearing 7–15 flowers.
The inflorescence has a stalk of 1.5–4.5 cm, and the flower stalks are 0.5–0.7 cm.
The flowers are about 0.8 cm across, with 4 yellow-green petals.
The fruit is an obovoid capsule about 1–1.5 cm across, slightly four-ridged, ripening pale yellowish brown and splitting into four to hang out red seeds.
[Cultivation]
Propagate from seed or cuttings.
Plants grown from seed vary in character and may turn out male, so cuttings are the usual method.
It prefers fertile, well-drained, moderately moist soil in sun to partial shade.
The roots are shallow, so it dislikes dryness.
For potted plants, water thoroughly when the soil surface dries; for plants in the ground, rainfall is sufficient unless dry weather continues.
Apply slow-release fertilizer at the base of the plant as fertilizer in winter.
There are no particular pests or diseases.
