Potentilla niponica ("Hirohanokawarasaiko")

Japanese name: ヒロハノカワラサイコ (広葉河原柴胡)
Scientific name: Potentilla niponica

[Overview]
A perennial 20–40 cm tall, found on sunny riverbeds and grasslands.
The roots are thick, woody, and extend deep into the ground.
The stems branch well at the base and spread, and the upper parts rise upright and are densely covered with soft hairs.
The stems and leaf axes are often tinged with red.
The leaves include basal leaves and leaves arranged alternately on the stem, and are odd-pinnately compound with 7–15 leaflets.
The leaflets are oblanceolate to narrowly oblong and shallowly pinnately lobed; the underside is densely covered with white woolly hairs, and the margins are often rolled under.
There are no accessory leaflets between the leaflets.
The leaf axis has long hairs, and stipules are attached at the base of the petiole.
The stipules of the stem leaves are slightly serrated.
A cyme at the stem tip bears many yellow 5-petaled flowers 1 cm across, with notched petal tips.
There is a calyx and an epicalyx; the epicalyx is almost as long as the calyx, and both are densely covered with woolly hairs on the outside.
The fruit is an achene.

[Uses]
