Anemone sylvestris (snowdrop anemone)
Japanese name: アネモネ シルベストリス
Scientific name: Anemone sylvestris
[Overview]
A perennial that is found in deciduous broad-leaved forests in its native habitat and often grows in colonies.
The rhizome creeps and spreads sideways.
The whole plant has long white hairs.
Basal leaves arise from the rhizome.
The basal leaves are palmately 5-lobed, and the lobes are further divided.
The flower stem is 20–40 cm tall, and the leaves on the stem grow in whorls of three.
The stem leaves are ternately compound; the leaflets are deeply pinnately divided and have petioles.
A single flower is borne at the stem tip.
The flower is about 4–7 cm across and opens facing upward, with 5 white elliptical sepals that look like petals.
There are many stamens, and the anthers are yellow.
There are also many pistils.
The fruit is an achene.
[Cultivation]
Propagate from seed or by division.
Seed should be sown fresh, immediately after collecting.
It prefers sun to partial shade and fertile, well-drained, slightly moist soil.
Poor sunlight reduces flowering.
It dislikes heat and dryness, so keep direct sunlight off the base of the plant.
For potted plants, move them to a cool shaded place from early summer when the leaves die back, and otherwise keep them in the sun.
It is very cold hardy, but care is needed against freezing.
In the garden, the space under deciduous trees is suitable.
In the garden, watering is unnecessary unless the soil becomes extremely dry.
For potted plants, water when the soil surface dries so that the plant does not run short of water during the growing season.
After dormancy begins, water only so that the soil does not dry out too much.
In spring and autumn, apply fertilizer placed on the soil once a month or liquid fertilizer once a week.
Pests and diseases include southern blight, anthracnose, gray mold, aphids and slugs.
