Japanese name: ハナセンナ(花栴那) Scientific name:Senna corymbosa
[Overview]
An evergreen shrub 2–3 m tall, but in cold regions it drops its leaves or dies back in winter.
It spreads by sending out stolons.
Leaves are alternate, evenly pinnately compound, 3–5.5 cm long, consisting of 2–3 pairs of leaflets.
The leaflets are lanceolate to oblong-obovate, 2.5–8 cm long, with an asymmetrical base.
Racemes about 4 cm long arise from the leaf axils and stem tips, each bearing 4–10 flowers.
The flowers are bright yellow with 5 petals; the petals are round and 1.5 cm long, and there are 10 stamens.
The fruit is a cylindrical pod 8–13 cm long containing 30–50 seeds.
[Cultivation]
Propagate from seed, cuttings or layering.
It can overwinter if not exposed to frost, and in warm regions it can overwinter outdoors without losing its leaves.
In cold regions, bring it indoors to a sunny spot.
In a sunny, well-drained place it is easy to grow regardless of soil.
It has a taproot and dislikes being transplanted.
Water thoroughly when the soil surface dries.
Fertilizer is unnecessary because it fixes atmospheric nitrogen by itself.
It is good to cut it back hard after flowering and reshape it.
There are no particular pests or diseases.
