Japanese name: コミヤマカタバミ(小深山片喰) Scientific name:Oxalis acetosella var. acetosella
[Overview]
A perennial 5–15 cm tall, found mainly in subalpine coniferous forests, often growing in colonies.
The rhizome is slender and often branched, with the bases of old petioles remaining at the nodes.
The leaves grow in clusters from the rhizome and consist of 3 leaflets.
The leaflets are obcordate, 1–3 cm wide, heart-shaped with a notched tip and rounded corners.
Soft hairs grow sparsely on the underside of the leaves, and sometimes on the upper surface as well.
The petiole is 3–10 cm long, and hairless or sparsely hairy.
The flower stem rises above the leaves, with a bract slightly above the middle.
A single white 5-petaled flower, 2–3 cm across, is borne at the tip of the flower stem.
The petals often have purple streaks.
At the end of the flowering season, cleistogamous flowers are produced.
The fruit is an ovoid capsule densely covered with hairs, which scatters its seeds when ripe.
