[Overview]
An annual or biennial found along roadsides and in vacant lots.
The stem is vine-like and grows to about 1.5 m.
The leaves are alternate and even-pinnately compound, consisting of 4–8 pairs of leaflets.
The leaflets are narrowly obovate, 2–3 cm long and 0.4–0.5 cm wide, with the tip shallowly notched like the notch of an arrow.
The leaf tip has a tendril that branches into three.
The stipules are deeply 2-lobed and have brown glandular spots (nectaries).
One to three reddish-purple pea-shaped flowers are borne in the leaf axils.
The calyx is 5-lobed, and all the lobes are about the same length.
The fruit is a legume, broadly linear, 3–5 cm long and 0.5–0.6 cm wide, with a hairless surface; it ripens black and splits open.
It contains 5–10 spherical seeds.
