Vicia japonica var. japonica ("Hirohakusafuji")

Japanese name: ヒロハクサフジ (広葉草藤)
Scientific name: Vicia japonica var. japonica

[Overview]
A perennial found in sunny sandy grassland along the coast.
The plant turns green to yellowish green when dried.
The rhizome is long and woody.
The stem is vine-like and grows to about 1 m.
The leaves are alternate and even-pinnately compound, consisting of 10–16 leaflets.
The leaflets are oblong, 1–2 cm long and 0.5–1 cm wide, with rounded tips; both surfaces have soft white hairs, and later only the upper surface becomes hairless.
The leaf tip has a branched tendril.
The stipules are small and 2-lobed.
Racemes arise from the leaf axils and densely bear pale bluish-purple pea-shaped flowers 1.2–1.5 cm long, turned to one side.
In the flower, the limb (the recurved part) of the standard petal is about as long as the claw (the tubular part).
The ovary is hairless.
The calyx is 0.6–0.7 cm long, and the lateral calyx lobes are narrowly triangular to triangular, about 2 mm long.
The part of the inflorescence bearing flowers is shorter than the stalk of the inflorescence.
The fruit is a legume, narrowly elliptic, 1.5–2.5 cm long and 0.5–0.6 cm wide.
It contains 3–4 slightly flattened, spherical seeds.
