Japanese name: ネコノメソウ(猫目草) Scientific name:Chrysosplenium grayanum
[Overview]
A perennial found in mountain wetlands, valleys and similar places.
The stolons creep along the ground and are hairless except at the leaf axils.
The leaves are simple and opposite, broadly ovate to ovate-round, with 6–16 blunt teeth on the margin.
The petiole is 0.2–0.6 cm.
Stolons and flower stalks emerge from the leaf axils.
The flower stalk is 4–20 cm tall.
A cyme is produced at the tip of the flower stalk.
The inflorescence has leaf-like bracts that are broadly ovate to ovate-round, and at flowering time the bracts, together with the upper leaves, may take on a yellowish-green tinge.
The flowers are 1.5–2 mm across and have no petals; the calyx is pale yellowish green to pale yellow.
The fruit is a capsule that splits open when ripe, and many seeds show.
The seeds are glossy brown and ovate.
[Notes]
The Japanese name compares the way the seeds are borne to a cat's eyes.
