[Overview]
A perennial found in somewhat shaded places along mountain streams on the Pacific side.
Stolons grow long after flowering, reaching 30 cm.
The leaves are basal leaves and stem leaves borne on the flower stalk; the basal leaves have usually withered by the flowering season.
The stem leaves are simple and opposite, ovate to elliptic, with 4–9 teeth on the margin.
The leaf surface usually has grayish-white markings.
The leaves have petioles.
A flower stalk 3–15 cm tall is produced.
The flower stalk is tinged dark purple, bears 1–2 pairs of leaves, and is hairless.
A cyme is produced at the tip of the flower stalk.
The inflorescence has leaf-like bracts that are ovate to triangular-ovate, and the upper bracts turn yellow.
The flowers are 3–4.5 mm across, with no petals and a yellowish-green calyx that spreads open.
There are usually 8 stamens, and the anthers just before splitting open are dark reddish purple.
The fruit is a capsule that splits open when ripe, revealing many seeds.
The seeds are elliptic to ovate.
