Ranunculus hakkodensis ("Tsurukitsunenobotan")

Japanese name: ツルキツネノボタン (蔓狐牡丹)
Scientific name: Ranunculus hakkodensis

[Overview]
A perennial 10–25 cm tall, growing along mountain streams in the deep mountains.
The stem is erect at flowering time and branches in the upper part.
After flowering, the stem falls over, creeps along the ground and extends about 1 m.
The stem and petioles have rough, upward-pointing hairs.
The leaves are ternate compound leaves, hairless or with appressed hairs on both surfaces.
The basal leaves have long petioles, and the leaflets are divided into 2–3 lobes and have short stalks.
The stem leaves are alternate, with short petioles and leaflets that are almost stalkless.
The flowers are borne singly in the leaf axils in the upper part of the stem, and because they have flower stalks 1.5–2 cm long, they bloom higher than the stem.
The flowers are yellow with 5 petals, each petal 6–8 mm long.
The sepals have rough hairs on the outside and are bent back at flowering time.
The fruit is an aggregate fruit 6 mm in diameter, with a fruit stalk about 10 cm long.
The achenes are 3 mm long and flattened.
