Japanese name: ケキツネノボタン(毛狐牡丹) Scientific name:Ranunculus cantoniensis
[Overview]
A perennial 20–65 cm tall, found in sunny, moist places such as the banks between rice paddies.
The stem branches well and is densely covered with spreading hairs.
The base of the stem is covered with the fibrous remains of the previous year's dead leaf stalks.
The leaves are of two kinds, basal leaves and leaves alternate on the stem; 1–3 basal leaves appear, each a ternate compound leaf 4–9 cm long and 6–12 cm wide, with shallowly incised lobes and toothed margins.
Both leaf surfaces are sparsely covered with appressed hairs.
The basal leaves have petioles 6–25 cm long, densely covered with spreading hairs.
The stem leaves are divided into 3 lobes, either fully or deeply, and the petioles are short or absent.
Several flowers are borne in a cyme at the top of the stem, each on a flower stalk 0.5–1.5 cm long.
The flowers are yellow with 5 petals, each petal 0.5 cm long.
The sepals have appressed hairs on the outside and are bent back at flowering time.
The fruit is a spherical aggregate fruit 0.8–1.2 cm in diameter.
The achenes are 0.3–0.4 cm long and flattened, with a border all the way around, and the tip is either not curved or only gently curved.
