Ranunculus grandis var. austrokurilensis("Shikotankinpoge")
Japanese name: シコタンキンポウゲ(色丹金鳳花) Scientific name:Ranunculus grandis var. austrokurilensis
[Overview]
A perennial about 10–50 cm tall, growing in moist grasslands, sandy ground and wetlands near the coast in northern regions.
A single stolon extends underground.
The lower part of the stem has many appressed hairs, as do the leaf stalks, flower stalks and the outside of the sepals, and the base of the stem is covered with the fibrous remains of the previous year's dead leaf stalks.
The leaves are of two kinds, basal leaves and leaves on the stem; the basal leaves are 2–6 cm long and 2.5–7.5 cm wide, palmately divided into 3 lobes, medium to deep (sometimes fully divided into 3), the lobes have pointed incisions, and the base is shallowly heart-shaped to truncate.
Both leaf surfaces are hairy.
The petioles of the basal leaves are 3–12 cm long.
The leaves on the stem are alternate.
Several flowers are borne in a cyme at the stem tip, or a single flower is borne alone; the flowers are yellow with 5 petals, 2 cm in diameter.
The petals have a metallic sheen.
The nectaries are covered by fan-shaped appendages.
The fruit is an achene; the achenes gather into a sphere, and the beak (persistent style) of each achene is curved.
