Miscanthus floridulus(Pacific Island silvergrass, "Tokiwasusuki")
Japanese name: トキワススキ(常磐薄) Scientific name:Miscanthus floridulus
[Overview]
An evergreen perennial more than 2 m tall, found in sunny places near the coast.
The underground stem is short and branches to form a large clump.
The stem is erect and hard.
The leaves are long and linear, with a conspicuous thick white midrib.
The leaf margins have sharp hooked prickles and are rough, and can cut the hands.
A large corymbose inflorescence 30–50 cm long is borne at the tip of the stem.
The main axis of the inflorescence extends almost the full length of the inflorescence.
The inflorescence bears many slender branches leaning to one side.
These branches carry many spikelets 3.5 mm long, each consisting of 2 florets.
The base of the spikelets has white to pale purple hairs, and because the anthers and stigmas are purple, the whole flower spike is tinged with purple.
The outer glume has a long awn.
[Cultivation]
Propagate by division or from seed.
In a sunny, well-drained place, there is nothing in particular to watch for.
