[Overview]
A perennial 60–90 cm tall, found in sunny places in the mountains.
It has a short rhizome and forms clumps.
The stem has 4–6 nodes, and the nodes are covered with fine hairs.
The leaves are alternate; those on the lower part of the stem are linear, about 13–40 cm long, and those on the upper part are lanceolate, 10 cm or less in length.
The undersides of the leaves are hairy.
At the stem tip it produces a flower spike made up of 2–5 racemes, each about 7–15 cm long.
On each raceme, long-stalked spikelets and short-stalked spikelets grow in pairs.
The spikelets are pointed, and the second floret has an awn about 0.8–1.5 cm long, which is twisted and bent.
