Eragrostis curvula (weeping lovegrass, "Shinadaresuzumegaya")

Japanese name: シナダレスズメガヤ (撓垂雀茅)
Scientific name: Eragrostis curvula

Eragrostis curvula

[Overview]
A perennial 60–120 cm tall.
The stems arch and droop together with the leaves, growing in tufts to form a large clump.
The leaves are 40–60 cm long and about 0.2 cm wide, and roll inward into a thread shape.
Long hairs grow at the top of the leaf sheath.
A conical spike 20–40 cm long emerges at the stem tip, and spikelets are borne on the inflorescence branches beyond their midpoint.
White hairs grow at the branching points of the spike.
The spikelets are 6–12 mm long, flat and lanceolate, consisting of 7–11 florets, and are grayish green, sometimes tinged with reddish purple.
When ripe, the caryopsis falls out of the lemma and other parts, leaving it exposed.

[History]
It was introduced around 1950 for greening road slopes and similar places, and some plants have become naturalized.
