Eragrostis multicaulis ("Niwahokori")

Japanese name: ニワホコリ
Scientific name: Eragrostis multicaulis

[Overview]
A delicate annual 10–30 cm tall, found in sunny places such as roadsides and gardens, often growing in colonies.
There are no glandular dots anywhere on the plant.
The stems are hairless, thin and hard, and form a clump.
The leaves are linear, 5–12 cm long and 0.1–0.3 cm wide, and hairless; the leaf sheath is also hairless, and the ligule consists of a row of very short hairs.
A conical spike 4–12 cm long emerges at the stem tip, with several thin branches whorled at each node, bearing spikelets.
The branching points of the spike are hairless.
The spikelets are long ovate, 2–3.5 mm long and 1–1.5 mm wide, consisting of 4–8 florets, and are often tinged with reddish purple.
When ripe, the caryopsis falls out of the lemma and other parts, leaving it exposed.

[Notes]
The Japanese name derives from its flourishing in gardens.
