Japanese name: コトネアスター ダンメリ Scientific name:Cotoneaster dammeri
[Overview]
An evergreen shrub 30–40 cm tall.
The branches creep along the ground and send out roots from the nodes where they touch the soil.
The leaves are simple and alternate, elliptic, 1–2 cm long and 0.7–2.2 cm wide.
The upper surface is dark green and glossy, with 4–6 pairs of lateral veins.
The leaf margin is entire.
The flowers are borne singly in the leaf axils or 2–3 in corymbs; they are white, 1 cm across, with 5 petals.
The petals have a claw at the base.
There are 20 stamens, and the anthers are reddish purple.
The fruit is a pome 0.6–0.7 cm across that ripens red and remains until winter.
[Cultivation]
Propagate from seed or cuttings.
The germination rate of the seeds falls sharply when they dry out, so remove the flesh and sow immediately, or store them so that they do not dry out.
It prefers sunny, well-drained, fertile sandy soil, but is not particular about soil type.
Rainfall is sufficient unless conditions become extremely dry.
Apply slow-release or organic fertilizer twice, in winter and after flowering.
Basically it is grown in its natural form without pruning, but if pruning is desired, do it in February–March.
Spider mites may appear during the high temperatures of summer.
