Scientific name: Dendrobium
[Overview]
A group of hybrids.
An epiphytic evergreen perennial 20–60 cm tall.
The rhizome is short and produces many roots.
The fleshy, cylindrical stems grow in clumps.
The leaves are simple and alternate in two rows, lanceolate to oblong, with entire margins.
Flowers are borne 1–3 at a time from the nodes in the upper part of the stem.
The dorsal sepal, lateral sepals and lateral petals are oblong to lanceolate.
The lip is ovate and slightly 3-lobed.
[History]
It was bred from Dendrobium nobile.
[Cultivation]
Propagate by division and by taking offsets (keiki).
It is desirable to keep it at 5°C or higher, but it is very cold tolerant and will not die as long as it does not freeze.
Grow it in a sunny, airy place.
Strong summer sun can cause leaf scorch, so provide light shade.
In winter, bring it indoors to a sunny spot.
Without enough sun, flowering is poor.
Plant it in sphagnum moss.
It dislikes humidity, so water after the potting material has dried.
Water generously during the growing season from early summer to autumn, then keep it on the dry side until flower buds form.
From the time flower buds form until flowering, water generously again.
From April to July, place oil cake fertilizer once a month and give liquid fertilizer once a week.
Pests and diseases include viral disease, spider mites, scale insects, aphids and slugs.
