Carpesium macrocephalum ("Ogankubiso")

Japanese name: オオガンクビソウ (大雁首草)
Scientific name: Carpesium macrocephalum

Carpesium macrocephalum

[Overview]
A perennial about 100 cm tall, found in moist forests.
The stem branches freely and bears short hairs, as do the leaves.
There are basal leaves and leaves alternate on the stem; the basal leaves have withered by flowering time.
The stem leaves are simple; the lower ones are ovate, 30–40 cm long and 10–15 cm wide, with uneven double teeth, thin and soft in texture, with a rounded base that runs down into the petiole.
The leaves gradually become smaller toward the top of the stem.
The petiole has broad wings.
The flower heads consist only of yellow to yellowish green tubular flowers; one is borne at the tip of each branch, with many linear to broadly oblanceolate bracts.
The involucre is hemispherical, 2.5–3.3 cm across, and the outer involucral bracts are leaf-like.
The fruit is an achene with a short beak at the tip.
Sticky fluid comes out of the beak.
