Carpesium cernuum

Carpesium cernuum ("Koyabutabako")

Japanese name: コヤブタバコ (小藪煙草)
Scientific name: Carpesium cernuum

Carpesium cernuum

[Overview]
A perennial 50–100 cm tall, found in woods.
The stem is thick and much branched, with soft hairs on it as on the leaves.
There are basal leaves and leaves alternate on the stem; the basal leaves have withered by the flowering season.
The stem leaves are simple; the lower ones are spatulate-oblong, 9–25 cm long and 4–5 cm wide, with irregular teeth, soft in texture, and with a wedge-shaped base running down into the petiole.
The leaves gradually become smaller toward the upper part of the stem.
The petiole is winged.
The flower heads consist only of greenish-white tubular florets, are borne singly at the branch tips, and have many linear-lanceolate bracts.
The involucre is hemispherical, 1.5–1.8 cm across, and the outer involucral bracts are leaf-like with slightly recurved tips.
The fruit is an achene with a short beak at the tip.
The beak exudes a sticky fluid.
