Carpesium divaricatum var. abrotanoides ("Hosobagankubiso")

Japanese name: ホソバガンクビソウ (細葉雁首草)
Scientific name: Carpesium divaricatum var. abrotanoides

[Overview]
A perennial 25–100 cm tall, found in partial shade in mountain forests and at forest edges.
The stem is erect and branches in the upper part, with the branches spreading and ascending.
The stem has no spreading hairs and is often tinged purplish brown.
There are basal leaves and leaves alternate on the stem; the basal leaves have withered by flowering time.
The stem leaves are simple; the lower ones are about 18 cm long and 5 cm wide, ovate-oblong with a pointed tip, with low, slightly wavy teeth and glandular dots on the underside; the leaf base is wedge-shaped to rounded, and the petiole is winged from about the middle upward.
The leaves in the middle of the stem are narrowly oblong, 12–15 cm long and 3–5 cm wide, with a short petiole, and become smaller toward the top of the stem.
The flower heads consist only of yellow tubular flowers; one is borne at the tip of each upper branch and several on each middle branch, with 2–4 recurved, oblong-oblanceolate bracts.
The involucre is bell-shaped, 0.5–0.6 cm long; the involucral bracts overlap like roof tiles in 4 rows, and the outer ones are about 1/3 the length of the inner ones, with green, herbaceous tips.
The fruit is an achene with a short beak at the tip.
Sticky fluid comes out of the beak.
