Vaccinium yatabei ("Himeusunoki")

Japanese name: ヒメウスノキ (姫臼木)
Scientific name: Vaccinium yatabei

Vaccinium yatabei

[Overview]
A deciduous shrub 10–30 cm tall, found in coniferous forests in the subalpine zone.
It spreads by extending underground stems.
The stem is green, grows in a zigzag, is hairless, and has distinct ridges.
Leaves are simple and alternate, ovate-round, 1–2.5 cm long and 0.7–1.5 cm wide, with pointed tips and a thin texture; hairs grow on the veins of the upper surface and on the underside.
The leaf margins have fine hooked serrations.
A single flower is borne at the base of the new branch.
The corolla is greenish white and urn-shaped, 4 mm long, with 5 shallow lobes at the tip.
The tips of the lobes curl back.
There are 10 stamens, which do not protrude from the corolla.
The fruit is a slightly angular, obovate-spherical berry 8 mm across, with a shallow mortar-like depression at the tip.
The fruit ripens bright red; it is sweet-sour and edible.
