Cardamine impatiens var. impatiens (narrowleaf bittercress, "Janinjin")

Japanese name: ジャニンジン (蛇人参)
Scientific name: Cardamine impatiens var. impatiens

[Overview]
An annual or winter annual found in the shade or slightly moist places of low hills and mountains.
The stem is 12–80 cm tall, ridged, often branched in the lower part, and sometimes has hairs at the base.
There are basal leaves and leaves borne on the stem; the basal leaves may have withered by the flowering period.
The stem leaves are alternate and odd-pinnately compound, with 9–21 leaflets.
The leaflets in the lower part of the stem are ovate with deep, incised serrations, while those in the upper part are lanceolate with shallow serrations.
The terminal leaflet of the stem leaves is about the same shape and size as the lateral leaflets, or only slightly larger.
The leaves are thin in texture.
The base of the leaf stalk is pointed like an ear and clasps the stem.
The flowers are borne in racemes and are white and 4-petaled; the petals are spatulate, 2–3.5 mm long, but sometimes degenerate.
There are 6 stamens.
The fruit is a silique 1.5–2.5 cm long, often with stiff, ascending bristles.
Inside the fruit, many oblong seeds about 1.3 mm long are arranged in one row, and the tip of the seed has a narrow wing.
