Japanese name: シモツケソウ(下野草) Scientific name:Filipendula multijuga var. multijuga
[Overview]
A perennial 30–100 cm tall, found in sunny mountain grasslands and often growing in colonies.
The stem is slender and erect.
The leaves are of two kinds: basal leaves and stem leaves.
The stem leaves are alternate and odd-pinnately compound; there are 1–5 pairs of lateral leaflets, but they are small, 0.3–3 cm long and 0.2–2.5 cm wide, and are often inconspicuous.
The terminal leaflet is round, 5–15 cm across, palmately divided into 5–7 lobes, and has doubly serrate or incised-serrate margins.
Corymbs at the stem tips bear many pale pink flowers 4–5 mm across, with 4–5 petals.
The many long stamens stand out.
The fruit is a flattened achene.
