Vicia villosa subsp. varia ("Nayokusafuji")

Japanese name: ナヨクサフジ (弱草藤)
Scientific name: Vicia villosa subsp. varia

Vicia villosa subsp. varia

[Overview]
An annual to biennial.
The plant is hairless overall, or only sparsely hairy.
The stem branches well and is vine-like, growing to about 1.5 m.
The leaves are alternate and even-pinnately compound, consisting of 4–12 pairs of leaflets.
The leaflets are oblong to lanceolate, 10–30 mm long and 3–7 mm wide.
The leaf tip has a branched tendril.
Racemes 1–1.8 cm long arise from the leaf axils and bear bluish-purple to reddish-purple pea-shaped flowers turned to one side.
In the flower, the limb (the recurved part) of the standard petal is 1/2 the length of the claw (the tubular part).
The fruit is a legume, flattened elliptic, 2–4 cm long and 0.4–1.2 cm wide.

[Notes]
It resembles Kusa-fuji, but in Kusa-fuji the limb and claw of the standard petal are about the same length.
