Japanese name: マルバマンサク(丸葉満作) Scientific name:Hamamelis japonica var. discolor f. obtusata
[Overview]
A deciduous shrub to small tree found on the Sea of Japan side.
Young branches and petioles are fairly densely covered with stellate hairs.
Leaves are simple and alternate, obovate to obovate-orbicular, with rounded tips.
Stellate hairs grow on both sides of the leaves.
The leaf margins have rounded, wavy serrations.
The leaves have petioles.
The flowers open before the leaves unfold and grow in clusters of 2–4 in the leaf axils.
The flowers are yellow with 4 petals, and the petals are long and narrow, twisted like ribbons.
There are 4 short stamens.
The fruit is a capsule densely covered with pale brown stellate hairs.
[Cultivation]
Propagate by layering.
It prefers sunny, well-drained, moisture-retentive, fertile soil.
Places with strong afternoon sun or severe dryness in summer are unsuitable because the plant will drop its leaves.
Rainfall is sufficient for watering except when sunny weather continues in summer and the soil dries out.
Apply organic fertilizer around the plant as fertilizer in winter; applying it in spring as well speeds growth.
Prune after flowering and before new shoots emerge, but since the natural shape is often enjoyed, limit pruning to removing dead branches.
There are no particular pests or diseases.
