[Overview]
A deciduous shrub to small tree 3–8 m tall.
Young branches are densely covered with soft hairs.
The leaves are simple and alternate, 8–15 cm long and 6–10 cm wide, round to broadly obovate.
The upper surface of the leaf has stellate hairs, and the underside has dense cottony hairs.
The leaf margins have rounded, tooth-like serrations.
The petiole is 6–10 mm.
The flowers are borne in clusters of 3–4 in the leaf axils.
The flowers are yellow with 4 petals; the petals are long and ribbon-like, and red to reddish brown at the base.
The flowers have a pleasant fragrance.
Unlike the Japanese Mansaku, it is characterized by dead leaves remaining at the time of flowering.
The fruit is an ovoid capsule about 1.2 cm long and 1 cm wide.

[Cultivation]
Propagate by layering.
It prefers sunny, well-drained, moisture-retentive, fertile soil.
Places exposed to strong afternoon sun or severely dry in summer cause the leaves to drop and are unsuitable.
Rainfall is sufficient, except when sunny weather continues in summer.
Fertilizer is not particularly necessary.
There are no particular pests or diseases.
