Thalictrum tuberiferum var. tuberiferum ("Miyamakaramatsu")
Japanese name: ミヤマカラマツ (深山唐松)
Scientific name: Thalictrum tuberiferum var. tuberiferum
[Overview]
A perennial 10–80 cm tall, found in damp places at forest edges and along ravines.
It has spindle-shaped swollen roots and often sends out stolons.
The stem sometimes branches in the upper part and is usually hairless, but rarely has spreading hairs.
There are basal leaves and stem leaves; there are usually 1–2 basal leaves even at flowering, and they are 2–3 times ternately compound with long petioles.
The leaflets are ovate to ovate-rhombic with coarse teeth.
The stem leaves are alternate and 1–2 times ternately compound, and may be simple in the upper part of the stem.
There are no stipules at the base of the petiole or at the base of the leaflet stalks.
The leaves sometimes have white blotches.
A corymb at the stem tip bears many flowers.
The flowers have no petals, and the petal-like sepals also fall early after flowering.
The many white, club-shaped stamens, thickened at the tip, are conspicuous.
The fruit is a crescent-shaped achene with 3 ridges, borne on a stalk and spreading outward.
[Cultivation]
Propagate from seed or by division.
It prefers fertile soil that is well drained and retains water well.
It is best given sun from autumn to spring and kept cool in partial shade in summer.
Take care that it does not dry out; from spring to autumn, water thoroughly when the soil surface dries, and in winter too, do not let it become extremely dry.
Apply base fertilizer, and place slow-release fertilizer on the soil in spring and autumn, making sure no fertilizer remains in midsummer.
Pests and diseases include soft rot, powdery mildew, spider mites and aphids.
