Japanese name: アマギカンアオイ(天城寒葵) Scientific name:Asarum muramatsui
An evergreen perennial with a limited distribution, growing in deciduous forests.
The stem creeps along the ground and gives off a fragrance when damaged.
The leaves have green stalks and are broadly ovate to oblong, 5–8 cm long, with a deeply heart-shaped base.
The upper surface is bright green, rarely tinged with purple, strongly glossy, and the veins are markedly sunken.
Sparse white hairs grow near the leaf margin.
A single flower is borne in a leaf axil; it is dark green, rarely tinged with dingy purple, and blooms sideways at ground level.
The flower is about 2 cm across and has no petals.
The upper part of the bell-shaped calyx tube, swollen and about 1 cm long, splits into 3 petal-like lobes.
The tip of the tube is slightly constricted.
The calyx lobes have markedly wavy margins and are hairy on the inner surface.
There are 6 styles, longer than half the calyx tube, with tips strongly curved outward.
The flower stalk is about 1 cm.
