Asarum blumei

Asarum blumei ("Ran'yoaoi")

Japanese name: ランヨウアオイ (乱葉葵)
Scientific name: Asarum blumei

Asarum blumei

A perennial with a limited distribution, growing in deciduous forests from lowlands to mountains.
The stem is short and creeps along the ground.
The leaves have long stalks and are broadly ovate to ovate-elliptic, 6–15 cm long and 4–8 cm wide, but become halberd-shaped because the base projects outward.
The upper surface of the leaf is glossy and often has white cloud-like patterns.
A single flower is borne in a leaf axil; it is pale purplish brown and blooms at ground level. The flower is 1–1.2 cm across and has no petals; the upper part of the drum-shaped swollen calyx tube splits into 3 petal-like lobes.
