Astilbe

Astilbe (genus)

Japanese name: アスチルベ
Scientific name: Astilbe

Astilbe

[Overview]
A perennial that prefers moist places.
The leaves include basal leaves and stem leaves, and are 2–3 times ternately compound or odd-pinnately compound, rarely simple.
Many small 5-petaled flowers are borne in an inflorescence at the stem tip.
The fruit is a capsule.

[Cultivation]
Propagate by division and from seed.
It prefers fertile, well-drained soil in partial shade with moderate moisture.
Direct summer sunlight can scorch the leaves, so a place such as under deciduous trees is suitable.
Watch for dryness, and water thoroughly when the soil surface dries.
Apply slow-release chemical fertilizer in spring and autumn.
If drainage is poor and humidity builds up, southern blight and gray mold can occur.
