Agave schidigera
Japanese name: 滝の白糸
Scientific name: Agave schidigera
[Overview]
An evergreen succulent with a rosette 60–90 cm across and 60 cm tall; it is a monocarpic plant that dies after flowering.
It has no stem; the leaves form a rosette and are gutter-shaped lanceolate, 30–40 cm long and 2.5 cm wide, fleshy, with frayed, curled white fibers on the leaf margins.
An erect flower stalk 3–3.5 m tall bears a spike, and the flowers open in order from the bottom.
The flowers are yellowish green to deep purple, about 5 cm long; the corolla is 6-lobed, with the tips curving back.
There are 6 stamens, which protrude out of the flower.
The fruit is a capsule.
[Cultivation]
Propagate from seed, or by bulbils formed on the inflorescence or offsets formed at the base of the rosette.
It can overwinter outdoors in regions without frost.
It prefers a sunny, well-drained, well-ventilated place.
It does better on the dry side, so rainfall is sufficient.
From spring to autumn, apply slow-release fertilizer placed on the soil.
When the lower leaves wither, cut them off at the base.
Pests and diseases include spider mites and scale insects.
