Japanese name: カイヅカイブキ(貝塚伊吹) Scientific name:Juniperus chinensis ‘Kaizuka’
[Overview]
An evergreen coniferous tree.
A cultivar of ibuki, its branches twist spirally as they grow upward, giving the tree a flame-like shape.
The leaves are usually scale-like.
[Uses]
It is resistant to air pollution and tolerates shearing, so it is widely used for hedges and similar purposes.
[Cultivation]
Propagate by cuttings.
It prefers a sunny, well-drained, fertile soil on the slightly dry side.
For potted plants, water thoroughly when the soil surface dries; for plants in the ground, rainfall is sufficient.
Apply organic fertilizer in winter, and also place slow-release fertilizer on the soil in spring and autumn.
Pests and diseases include pear rust and scale insects.
[Notes]
Pear rust is a serious disease of pears, and because junipers serve as the intermediate host of pear rust, some local governments restrict the planting of junipers near pear orchards.
