Primula Pruhonicensis Group
Japanese name: プリムラ ジュリアン
Scientific name: Primula Pruhonicensis Group
[Overview]
A group of garden cultivars produced by crossing Primula Polyantha with Primula juliae.
They are perennials, but are not heat tolerant, so in Japan they are treated as annuals sown in summer to autumn.
The leaves are simple and basal.
The flowers are borne in umbels; the corolla is 5-lobed, and each lobe is further divided in two at the tip.
[Cultivation]
Propagate from seed or by division.
The seeds need light to germinate, so do not cover them with soil; water from the bottom, and raise seeds sown in summer in airy partial shade until autumn.
It prefers fertile, well-drained soil that also retains water well.
In winter, grow it in a pot in a sunny place indoors.
For plants in the ground, it can also overwinter outdoors if not exposed to cold wind, and it is good to plant it under a deciduous tree or the like that gives shade in summer.
For potted plants, when the soil surface dries, water from the edge of the pot so that water does not collect in the center of the plant, between the leaves or on the flowers.
For plants in the ground, rainfall is sufficient.
In addition to base fertilizer, apply liquid fertilizer so that fertilizer does not run out during the flowering period.
Spent flowers left on the plant can cause disease, so remove them promptly.
Pests and diseases include damping-off, Botrytis, soft rot, gray mold, cutworms, slugs, nematodes and root mites.
