Campanula glomerata subsp. glomerata ("Hanayatsushiroso")
Japanese name: ハナヤツシロソウ (花八代草)
Scientific name: Campanula glomerata subsp. glomerata
[Overview]
A perennial 0.2–0.9 m tall.
It prefers calcareous soil.
The stem is erect, with sparse white hairs or almost hairless.
There are basal leaves and stem leaves; the basal leaves are 4–13 cm long and 1.5–3.5 cm wide, ovate-lanceolate to ovate, with a leaf stalk, and have usually withered by flowering time.
The stem leaves are simple and alternate, oblong to ovate-lanceolate; the lower leaves have a leaf stalk and the upper leaves are stalkless.
The leaf margins are toothed.
The flowers are hardly ever borne in the leaf axils; they gather in a head at the stem tip, are enclosed by involucral bracts, and face upward.
The flowers are funnel-shaped, about 1.5–2.5 cm long, with the tip divided into 5 lobes, and are purple to bluish purple.
The fruit is a capsule.
[Cultivation]
Propagate from seed or by division.
It dislikes heat and humidity.
It prefers a well-drained site in sun to partial shade, out of the afternoon sun.
When planted in the ground, it is best planted under deciduous trees.
For potted plants, water thoroughly when the soil surface dries; for plants in the ground, rainfall is sufficient unless sunny weather continues and the soil becomes severely dry.
Fertilize sparingly; apart from basal fertilizer, give diluted liquid fertilizer in spring and autumn.
Pests and diseases include slugs, armyworms, spider mites and aphids.
