Veronica cymbalaria

[Overview]
A biennial found in vacant lots and by roadsides.
The whole plant is covered with soft white hairs.
The stems branch freely at the base and spread in all directions, with the upper parts rising obliquely.
The leaves are simple, opposite on the lower part of the stem and alternate on the upper part.
The leaves are ovate-orbicular, 0.5–1.5 cm in both length and width, with a truncate base and 1–4 pairs of large teeth on the margin.
Flowers are borne singly in the leaf axils.
The corolla is 4-lobed, 0.5 cm across and white, with a flower stalk 1–2 cm long.
The calyx is ovate with a blunt tip.
The fruit is a spherical capsule with a shallow depression in the center.

[History]
It has been cultivated at Koishikawa Botanical Garden since 1960, and plants that have escaped from cultivation are seen in urban areas of Tokyo.

[Notes]
The Japanese name compares the white flowers to those of Kogome-gusa.
