Japanese name: クワガタソウ(鍬形草) Scientific name:Veronica miqueliana
[Overview]
A perennial 10–20 cm tall, found in forests in the mountains.
It has a short underground stem, and several stems rise erect or obliquely.
The whole plant is hairy.
The leaves are simple and opposite, ovate to elliptic, 1–5 cm long and 0.7–2.5 cm wide, with low teeth; the leaves on the upper part of the stem are larger.
The petiole is 0.5–2 cm long.
A raceme 2–5 cm long emerges from the upper leaf axils of the stem and bears 1–5 flowers sparsely.
The corolla is 4-lobed and opens in a saucer shape, 0.8–1.3 cm across, pale pink with reddish purple streaks.
The fruit is a flattened, triangular fan-shaped capsule.
[Notes]
The Japanese name compares the slender calyx attached to the fruit to the kuwagata (horn-like crest) of a kabuto (helmet).
