Fraxinus sieboldiana ("Marubaaodamo")
Japanese name: マルバアオダモ (丸葉青梻)
Scientific name: Fraxinus sieboldiana
[Overview]
A deciduous tree found in low mountains.
The young branches, inflorescences and other parts are covered with short glandular hairs and fine hairs.
Leaves are opposite, odd-pinnately compound, with 3–5 leaflets.
The leaflets are ovate to ovate-oblong, 5–10 cm long and 1.5–3.5 cm wide, with a sharply pointed tip and low, indistinct serrations on the margin.
The underside of the leaf has white hairs along the midrib, which may later disappear.
It is gynodioecious.
Many small white flowers are borne in panicles at the branch tips.
There are leaves at the base of the inflorescence.
There are 4 slender petals.
The fruit is oblanceolate, 2–2.7 cm long and 4–5 mm wide, and winged.
The scales of the winter buds (bud scales) do not curl back, are covered with fine powdery hairs, and often have brown curly hairs on the margins.
[Cultivation]
Propagate from seed.
It prefers sunny, well-drained, moderately moist, fertile soil and dislikes extreme dryness.
Cultivation is relatively easy, but care is needed because it is sensitive to direct sunlight in summer.
For potted plants, water thoroughly when the soil surface dries; for plants in the ground, rainfall is sufficient for established plants unless summer brings a long spell of sunny weather and the soil dries out.
In winter, apply organic fertilizer around the plant.
There are no particular pests or diseases.
