Fraxinus apertisquamifera ("Miyamaaodamo")

Japanese name: ミヤマアオダモ (深山青梻)
Scientific name: Fraxinus apertisquamifera

[Overview]
A deciduous small tree about 10 m tall, growing in deep mountains.
It is dioecious.
The young twigs and inflorescences are hairless.
The two outer bud scales of the winter buds open and curve back, and the inner sides are densely covered with brown hairs.
Leaves are opposite, odd-pinnately compound, 10–20 cm long, with 5–9 leaflets.
The leaflets are oblong, 4–12 cm long and 1.5–4 cm wide, with a sharply pointed tip and finely toothed margins.
There are spreading hairs along the midrib on the underside of the leaf.
A panicle at the tip of the twig bears many small white flowers.
There are leaves at the base of the inflorescence.
The corolla is narrow and 4-lobed.
The fruit is narrowly oblanceolate, 2.5–3 cm long and 5 mm wide, winged and hanging down.

[Cultivation]
Propagate from seed.
It prefers fertile, moist soil in sun to partial shade and dislikes extreme dryness.
It is relatively easy to grow, but it is weak against direct sunlight in summer, so care is needed.
