Stellaria sessiliflora

Stellaria sessiliflora ("Miyamahakobe")

Japanese name: ミヤマハコベ (深山繁縷)
Scientific name: Stellaria sessiliflora

Stellaria sessiliflora

[Overview]
A perennial 10–35 cm tall, found in partially shaded places by water in the mountains.
The lower part of the stem creeps along the ground, and short soft hairs grow on one or both sides.
Leaves are simple and opposite, ovate to heart-shaped, 1–4 cm long and 0.7–2.5 cm wide.
The leaf stalk is 1.5 cm long, and long soft hairs grow on the leaf stalk and the base of the leaf.
The flowers are borne singly in the leaf axils; they are white with 5 petals, 1–1.5 cm across, but because each petal is deeply split in two, they look as if they have 10 petals.
There are 10 stamens.
Long soft hairs grow on the outside of the calyx.
Cleistogamous flowers may be produced in autumn.
The fruit is an ovate to spherical capsule.
The seeds are black and reniform-round, 1–1.5 mm across, with conical projections with rounded tips on the surface.
