Stellaria nipponica var. nipponica

Stellaria nipponica var. nipponica ("Iwatsumekusa")

Japanese name: イワツメクサ (岩爪草)
Scientific name: Stellaria nipponica var. nipponica

Stellaria nipponica var. nipponica

[Overview]
A perennial 5–20 cm tall, found on rocky and gravelly ground along ridges above the Siberian dwarf pine zone at 2500 m above sea level or higher, and near summits.
The stems creep along the ground, branch from the lower part, and spread by sending out roots from the nodes that touch the ground.
The stems are hairless.
Leaves are simple and opposite, linear, 2–3.5 cm long and 0.1–0.2 cm wide, with marginal hairs at the base.
Cymes at the stem tips and leaf axils bear 1–7 flowers.
The flowers are white with 5 petals, about 1.5 cm across, but because each petal is deeply split in two, they look as if they have 10 petals.
There are 10 stamens.
The fruit is an elliptical capsule 4–5 mm long.
The seeds are black and reniform-round, 1–1.2 mm across, with papillate projections around the edge.
