Japanese name: コケオトギリ (苔弟切)
Scientific name: Hypericum laxum

Hypericum laxum

[Overview]
An annual or perennial 3–10 cm tall, found in wetlands and on the banks of rice paddies.
In early winter, bulbils form in the leaf axils of the upper stem; when they fall to the ground, they germinate, overwinter, and become new seedlings.
The stem has 4 ridges and branches well from the base, creeping along the ground with the upper part rising upright.
Leaves are simple and opposite, circular to ovate-broadly elliptic, 0.2–0.7 cm long and 0.2–0.8 cm wide, with translucent dots.
The leaves are yellowish green, thin, and spreading, with the base half clasping the stem.
Cymes at the branch tips bear 1–6 flowers.
The flowers are yellow with 5 petals, 0.5–0.8 cm across, and have 5–20 yellow stamens.
The bracts are elliptic and leaf-like.
The fruit is a capsule.
