Hypericum calycinum ("Seiyokinshibai")
Japanese name: セイヨウキンシバイ (西洋金糸梅)
Scientific name: Hypericum calycinum
[Overview]
An evergreen shrub 20–60 cm tall.
It spreads by underground stems, and stems rise from each node.
The leaves are simple and opposite, oblong, 4–10 cm long, with glandular dots and entire margins.
The petiole is very short.
The flowers are usually solitary at the branch tips, yellow, 5-petaled, 5–7 cm across, with many yellow stamens.
The fruit is a capsule.
[Cultivation]
Propagate by cuttings or division.
It prefers a sunny site with good drainage and good water retention, and dislikes dryness.
Direct summer sun and dryness can scorch the leaves, so it may also be grown in partial shade.
Because it spreads by underground stems, to keep it from multiplying too much, build a frame underground or plant it in a large pot and bury the pot.
For potted plants, water thoroughly when the soil surface dries; for plants in the ground, rainfall is sufficient unless summer brings a long sunny spell and severe dryness.
In spring and autumn, place slow-release chemical fertilizer on the soil.
If pruning, do it in March–April.
There are no particular pests or diseases.
