Sorbus matsumurana ("Urajironanakamado")
Japanese name: ウラジロナナカマド (裏白七竈)
Scientific name: Sorbus matsumurana
[Overview]
A deciduous shrub 1–3 m tall, found from the subalpine to the alpine zone.
The branches are tinged with purple, and young branches are hairless.
The leaves are alternate, odd-pinnately compound, 10–20 cm long, and consist of 9–13 leaflets.
The leaflets are elliptic, 2–6 cm long and 1–2.5 cm wide, with serrations only on the upper half.
The upper surface of the leaf is hairless and dull, and the underside is tinged with a powdery white.
The leaves turn a brilliant red in autumn.
The stipules are leaf-like; those attached to the leaves just below the inflorescence are sometimes large, 0.6–1.3 cm long and 0.4–1.5 cm wide, of a distorted obovate-triangular to obcordate shape, with coarse serrations and palmate veins.
The stipules on leaves other than those below the inflorescence are small and of a distorted obovate shape, and all the stipules remain until flowering.
Upright compound corymbs at the branch tips bear many densely packed flowers.
The flowers are white, 5-petaled, 1–1.5 cm across, with petals spreading flat.
There are 5 styles.
The fruit is an elliptic pome 0.8–1.3 cm long, ripening red, with inward-curved sepals remaining at the top.
