Schoenoplectus hondoensis

Schoenoplectus hondoensis ("Miyamahotarui")

Japanese name: ミヤマホタルイ (深山蛍藺)
Scientific name: Schoenoplectus hondoensis

Schoenoplectus hondoensis

[Overview]
A perennial 12–62 cm tall, found in shallow water of alpine ponds and marshes.
It has a short rhizome.
The stem is cylindrical, 12–62 cm long and 0.8–2.5 mm wide, with no nodes above the base.
The leaves are basal, reduced to projections 1–3 mm long, and the leaf sheaths form tubes 3–18 cm long.
1–5 spikelets gather at the stem tip to form the inflorescence, but because the involucral bract stands upright, the inflorescence appears to be lateral.
There is usually one involucral bract, which is culm-like, upright and 2.5–9 cm long.
The spikelets are ovate, 5–10 mm long, and stalkless.
The scales of the spikelet are ovate, 3–3.5 mm long, and membranous.
There are 6 bristle-like perianth segments, equal to or about 1.5 times as long as the fruit, rough in a downward direction.
The fruit is glossy dark brown to blackish brown, obovate with 3 angles, 1.7–2 mm long and 1.2–1.3 mm wide, smooth or with slight transverse wrinkles.
