Japanese name: ヒメヤブラン(姫藪蘭) Scientific name:Liriope minor
[Overview]
An evergreen perennial found in sunny grasslands and in woodland.
The roots have elliptical swollen parts.
It spreads by sending out stolons.
The leaves are simple and basal, linear, 8–40 cm long and 0.2–0.3 cm wide.
The flower stalk is about 3–12 cm long with narrow wings, and bears a raceme 0.5–5 cm long.
The inflorescence bears 1–3 flowers per node, for a total of 3–17 flowers.
The flowers are pale purple to pink, 6-petaled and about 0.5 cm long, and the flower stalks are tinged with pale purple to white.
The fruit wall falls off early, so the round seeds, 0.5 cm in diameter, are exposed and ripen to a glossy black-purple.
[Uses]
The roots are used medicinally.
[Cultivation]
Propagate by division.
It is not particular about soil, adapts to a wide range of environments and grows easily and well, but flowering is poor in shade.
For potted plants, water thoroughly when the soil surface dries.
For plants in the ground, rainfall is sufficient.
Fertilizer is not particularly necessary for plants in the ground; for potted plants, apply slow-release fertilizer twice, in spring and autumn.
There are no particular pests or diseases.
