Calanthe masuca ("Onagaebine")

Japanese name: オナガエビネ (尾長蝦根)
Scientific name: Calanthe masuca

Calanthe masuca

[Overview]
An evergreen perennial 30–50 cm tall, found in evergreen broadleaf forests.
It has spherical pseudobulbs underground.
3 leaves emerge; they are narrowly oblong, 30–40 cm long and 10–15 cm wide, with a pointed tip and entire margins.
The leaves have longitudinal wrinkles.
A raceme at the tip of a flower stalk bearing 2–3 scale leaves densely carries 20–30 flowers.
The bracts are broadly ovate-lanceolate, 1–1.5 cm long.
The flowers are purplish pink and cup-shaped (not opening fully); the lateral petals and sepals are obovate, and the lateral petals are narrower than the sepals.
The lip is longer than the sepals and 3-lobed at the tip; the central lobe spreads widely like a fan and has a crest-like projection of purplish deep red at the center of the base.
The spur is 3.5–5 cm long.
